Innovative Street Furniture Using Gabion Technology
Over the past 12 months, demand for the Enviromesh free in-house desktop design advisory service for retaining walls and be-spoke projects has significantly increased. Enviromesh has now expanded its product range to include the design and manufacture of street furniture.
The flexibility of gabion baskets has enabled Enviromesh to design and manufacture products for gabion street furniture projects. The projects below detail two recently completed projects. For design suggestions please contact Enviromesh.
Northala Park, Northolt, Mddx – Gabion Litter Bins and Gabion Benches
Enviromesh have supplied over 270 traditional welded-mesh gabions for the newly commissioned Northala Park, Northolt, Mddx. Enviromesh was asked to design and supply 17 gabion litter bins and 54 gabion benches to be strategically positioned around the lake, play and relaxation areas within the park grounds. With prototypes approved, the bins were mounted on specially made pedestals and all products were hot-dip galvanised to give the design life requirements. To cater for the use of smaller aggregates, specially fabricated mesh panels (25.4mm square aperture) were produced to contain the filling medium. Enviromesh also provided the fixing idea to connect the bench seats and timber tops to both items.

St Paulinus Primary School in Guisborough – Gabion Amphitheatre
Enviromesh were similarly approached by the Murphy Group when refurbishing St Paulinus Primary School in Guisborough for the Diocese of Middlesbrough. The work required low-height seating to create an amphitheatre and Enviromesh was invited to discuss whether this could be done using curved timber-decked gabion walls. The answer was yes and the resulting gabion three-course seating arena encompassed the requirements of the scheme and retained the ground behind. The company also detailed, designed and supplied the clamp bars and strips to connect the timber seating to the underside of the gabions, which were filled with a grade 6G stone. All gabions were manufactured from 76.2 × 76.2 × 4mm Galfan-coated wire to meet both the aesthetic finish and durability requirements. Throughout, the Murphy Group liaised and worked closely with Harris Irwin Architects in getting the novel product and solution approved.

The extensive range of gabion baskets provided by Enviromesh enables the team to provide gabion wall solutions for a variety of applications, not least retaining walls. The Gabion 27 System is a modular 27in. (685mm) unit that gives:
- a high-quality design contrasted by reduced wall section in comparison to conventional gabion systems
- better distribution of internal mesh reinforcement within the wall
- improved aesthetics due to reduced cell size
- easier installation through the smaller modular size.
