Where noise pollution is a problem, gabions can provide an ideal acoustic walling solution to act as sound barriers.
The stuctural form taken can be either as free standing trapezoidal acoustic barriers or rectangular coursed structures where the sound walls are designed to resist wind loading. Alternatively a gabion fence solution can be used where internal support columns are provided for stability to a thin gabion vertical structure.
Gabions filled with irregular shaped rocks have the effect of scattering and absorbing the sound, thus reducing noise pollution.
With regard to aesthetics, it is possible to green the structure by vegetating with creeping plants which find support within the mesh.
